BioMarin Exploring More North Bay Growth

According to a report in the Marin Independent Journal, BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. is exploring a significant expansion of its Novato campus to accommodate R&D operations with increased warehouse and manufacturing space. The company is said to be in talks with Novato officials about special zoning designed to accommodate their potential development. Debra Charlesworth, a BioMarin spokeswoman, describes a potential campus-style development, which may include a shuttle service to Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit that would “provide parking efficiency and traffic reduction. We’d do that through formal programs to optimize transportation — flexible work hours, carpools, vanpools, support of public transportation.” Headquartered in San Rafael. BioMarin currently employs 1,500 people in Marin, contributes $504 million annually to the local economy, according to the Marin Economic Forum. Mount Tam Biotechnologies Seeks FDA Approval For Lupus Study

Novato-based Mount Tam Biotechnologies, which works closely with the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, is applying to the FDA to study an investigational drug to treat the immune disease lupus, which the Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide have lupus. The company, which licenses R&D assets from the Buck Institute, and features Buck CEO Brian Kennedy as chairman of the board, plans to start manufacturing its TAM-01 drug for lupus shortly and plans human clinical trials. In September of 2015, Mount Tam used a reverse merger to become public, a move that was recently profiled in detail in the North Bay Business Journal. NBLSA Capped BIO 2016 With Buck Institute Event

In addition to participating in the BIO 2016 Convention with a booth in the California Pavilion, the North Bay Life Science Alliance hosted a tour of the Buck Institute and networking event for BIO 2016 delegates, local business leaders and Bay Area media representatives. Guests enjoyed presentations from NBLSA chairman Chris Stewart and Buck entrepreneur-in-residence Stelios Tzannis. NBLSA members OUM & Co CPA sponsored a North Bay wine tasting. Visitors were given a tour of the Buck facility, with docents highlighting both North Bay biotech collaborations and the work of famed Buck architect I.M. Pei.
